PEMBROKESHIRE
COAST NATIONAL PARK
Carew
Castle still belongs to the Carew family. However, since 1983 the castle,
tidal mill, millpond and picnic area have been leased to the Pembrokeshire
Coast National Park Authority. We now run Carew as a visitor attraction and educational
site.
Between
1984 and 1998 we carried out a major programme of restoration work on
the castle, generously funded by CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments. This
involved consolidating much of the stonework and replacing three of the
huge Bath stone windows in the North Range.
The
work won a Prince of Wales Award in 1998. We have also collaborated with
the University of Wales, Lampeter on several years of archaeological excavations
and research.
